Quilting Blocks-The Half Square Triangle (HST)
The Half Square Triangle
Otherwise known as HST.
This method creates two half square triangles.
Finished block size 61/2″
If you are not very confident about your sewing being accurate, cut your 2 starting squares 71/2″ (If you are confident, cut your starting squares 7″)
On the wrong side of one square (lightest fabric) draw a line across diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner.
Place the squares together, right sides facing and stitch 1/4″ either side of the line.
Cut the square in half along diagonal line
Press each side so that the seam goes to the darkest side.
Trim down to 61/2″, using the diagonal marking on your ruler to line up with your seam.
This is just one method of making half square triangles, try different ones to see which you prefer.
HSTs are used in making up lots of different blocks. By a careful use of colour and direction, you can create lots of different patterns.
