The top is then put together with the wadding/batting and a backing piece. Although there is more bulk, it's not very stable. All the component parts are liable to move, each in a different direction, but then the quilting happens.
As each line of quilting goes in, the separate parts become one. No longer will they move independently of each other, they become integral parts of a whole. Now the quilt is beginning to gain some strength and stability, but it's not quite finished yet. The binding has to go on to complete the transformation.
I love the process of hand finishing a binding. It's my time to bond with the quilt. As you go round all four edges, you get to enjoy the quilt as you never will again. It's the first hug, and like giving birth to a child, all the pain, long hours and hard work becomes a distant memory. You're ready to send it out into the world to spread some love.
