So, why is making with children so important?
First of all, it's can help with their development. All five senses can come into play whilst making, it's definitely a great way to improve hand eye coordination. The skills and processes they learn whilst crafting, often provide them with the practical skills to help them in later life.
Second, their fine motor skills are refined. These are necessary for all areas of life, not just crafting, but it's a fun way to practice.
Have you noticed, some crafts mean you have to wait for paint of glue to dry? What a great way to learn patience. What if things go wrong? In creating, as well as in life, not everything turns out the way you expect. We can learn how to solve and overcome problems, and sometimes we just have to accept that different is good too.
Another important factor is building their self confidence and esteem. As they accomplish the small things, they are ready and willing to take on bigger challenges. There is such great satisfaction in making something you can use, or to give as a gift. You just have to look at a child's beaming face as they present their parent with a card they have made. That feeling never goes away, we just tend to hide it more as adults, but the feeling of accomplishment is always there.
Lastly, but by no means least, the fun they can have. It's a relaxed time for communication to take place and to get to know how they feel and what makes them happy. Making things together bridges the gap between the generations and bonds you together in a very special way.
This was actually one time where procrastination had paid off. I still had all the ingredients waiting to make bath bombs, it was something we could all do together and, more importantly, it meant they could make something to take home with them too.
I had a great time with the girls and I've heard the girls enjoyed themselves too. They've been talking about it all week and they've enjoyed using their bath bombs. We did make something else too which I'll show you another day.
