In Loopy's Place News

I was really looking forward to getting stuck into some proper sewing this week.  It all started so well and then disaster struck, you can read about it in thisblog post.  It's a cloud with a silver lining as I have lots of ideas for new makes. As I'm waiting for a delivery, I got a start on some new class projects and videos, but now, my machine is off for a service.  I'm not exactly sure when it will be back, but it's going to feel like a lifetime!  I do hope my spare one will behave for me.

On Tuesday, the Seeing Is Believing exhibition will be open.  I have the privilege of having a piece there and have had a wonderful few weeks working with some of the other artists featured. Here is the information from Artworks about the exhibition: All the work displayed at the exhbition will be part of a silent auction.  You can bid for the work by visiting the exhbition and filling in a silent auction form.  If you are unable to make the event you will also be able to bid via email by contacting
info@artworks-sheffield.co.uk
Over the next few days the work up for auction will be available to see on our website.
How it works; A silent auction is a bit different from a traditional auction in that attendees do not know the current highest bid.  Bidding in a silent auction is done privately, you may bid on multiple items at once. Afterward, the bids are examined and the person who bid the highest for each item claims and pays for that item.
The highest biders for each piece will be contacted and arrangements will be made to get your fantastic piece of artwork to you as quick as possible.
Seeing is Believing is an art exhibition featuring the work of artists in Sheffield with Intellectual Disabilities.  The exhibition wil run Monday 7 August 12pm until Wednesday 9 August 12pm at Millennium Galleries.  We will have a special pop up event on Tuesday 8 August between 10am - 4pm.
The exhibition takes inspiration from this years National Special Olympic Games, which will be hosted in Sheffield from 7 - 12 August.  Seeing is Believing focuses on achievement, self believe, collaborative practice and teamwork. It hopes to challenge peoples perceptions of intellectual disabilities through celebrating the creativity and ambition of the artists involved.
Seeing is Believing has been curated by ArtWorks, a not for profit organisation which provides creative opportunities and placements for adults with intellectual disabilities.  The exhibition celebrates the success and continuing development of the ArtWorks studio, a space for adults with intellectual disabilities to explore and challenge their creativity.
The exhbition will also feature the works of; Florence Blanchard, Anthony Bennett, Roanna Wells, Geo Law, Dave Draws, Mandy Payne, Katie Harnett, Masie Paradise, Sill, David Thomas and Vicky Fong and Loopy's Place.

It's been lovely this week seeing all the swap items arriving at their destinations.  I just love the recycling theme and really enjoy the stories behind them.  This is a beautiful piece of hoop art made by Mo.  Here is the story behind all the items she's used:

"the hoop was gifted from a friend who wasn't doing hooping anymore, the tartan was a door curtain at my old shop, the lace was from Doris who made toys in her youth, the sheep is felt from shoe packaging plus material from making a dolly bed for our grown-up girls, the flowers were from little wired up ones I bought for shop display, the sheep's flower was made from unravelled sock wool the oldest offspring found in charity shop and the hanging loop was tied around little parcels I'd bought for shop display and Margaret got that lacy stuff in place!"

I can't wait to see what delights turn up this week.

This week's tip is for those that make fabric binding strips.

One of the things that caught my eye this week was a little zipper charm from The Village Haberdashery.  It's a little cactus charm, you can see it here.

If you're looking for something crafty for the children to do over the holidays, every Wednesday and Thursday, Hobbycraft are running free workshops for children.  You do need to book as they get busy.  There art supplies are also on offer at the moment.

There's a new range of King Cole Luxury Merino DK just in at Deramores and I have to say I love the look of their Tonal Chunky yarn,

Still sticking with yarn, Love Knitting  are having a mega warehouse clearance,

You can still come and join us in this month's featured class and to make it easier, I've put together a kit that includes all the materials with the class, it means you can jump straight in to watch the videos to see how to make your own bicarbonate of soda odour eliminator.  You'll also receive the bonus project and information sheets.

I have had a lifelong love of crafts which started with being taught how to knit at a very young age.  It didn't take long to realise that great joy and satisfaction came from making things.  Even now, I get a thrill seeing something that started just as an idea, becoming a finished product, whether I make it, or teach someone else how to make it.
