Universal needles are the most commonly used and work well with most machines. They can be used with most fabric types, the finer ones used for lightweight fabric whilst larger sizes are used for heavyweight fabrics. For jersey fabric, leather and denim, it's better to use needles designed for that purpose
These machine needles are ideal to use on jersey, stretch and synthetic fabrics.
Quilting needles are designed to be used with several layers of fabric and wadding with a reinforced shaft. They are shorter in length to allow for quick and even stitching.
These needles are designed for heavy duty stitching and are suitable for denim fabrics.
I hope this will help to take out the fear and confusion when it comes to buying needles for your machine. This is only a brief outline of the basics, but it's a good start.
